Samantha’s adoption story

"It just felt like the right thing to do and the right time for me."

Samantha always wanted to have children but hadn't found the right partner.

"Time was becoming an issue" she explains. "Since my twenties I always said I was going to adopt, probably because I'm quite an independent person and have always done everything for myself."

Samantha runs her own Chiropody practice which has given her the chance to get advice from patients who have experience in adoption. "A real bonus as a chiropodist is getting to know your patients really well and over the years I've met people who have given me lots of advice, everything from plumbing to adoption!"

Part of the adoption process involves looking back over your childhood, which Samantha enjoyed doing with her family. "The whole process was really enjoyable", she says. "It didn't drag on like I was expecting, in fact my application sailed through. My social workers were really good and made it very easy. They also put me in touch with other people who are adopting that live close by which has been invaluable."

Getting support

Samantha visited a number of different agencies before making her decision. "It's important to do your research and speak to the experts and people who have gone through the process. In the end I chose my Local Authority, they had the right attitude and I like the fact that they are always going to be there for me, I find that reassuring."
