Government apology for forced adoptions
Published: Thursday, July 2, 2026
We welcome the Government’s recent apology to those affected by historical forced adoption practices. For many mothers, adoptees and families, this recognition is an important step in acknowledging the lasting impact these practices have had on individuals and families across generations.
We recognise that this announcement may bring a range of emotions and prompt people to seek information, support or reconnection with family members. We encourage anyone who feels they may benefit from advice, information or emotional support to reach out to specialist services.
Sources of Support
FamilyConnect, hosted by PAC-UK and funded by Adoption England, provides support and advice to adopted adults and birth family members affected by adoption. The service can also offer intermediary services for people adopted before 1976 and operates an advice line. More information is available here.
They also have an advice line with details here.
The Family Rights Group provides a directory of adoption support services across England. Using a postcode or local authority area, people can search for local services offering advice, counselling, contact support, support groups and other forms of adoption support.
Support is available for anyone affected by adoption who may wish to access advice, information or emotional support at this time.
